The main focus at Cherrybrook Athletics is improving the
athlete's own individual performance. In Little Athletics, this is encouraged
by a Coloured Patch Award system. Athletes are awarded coloured
patches, based on achieving certain levels of performance in a number of the
athletic disciplines, covering both track and field events. There are five
categories, - the easiest to achieve is the Yellow, with each level after (
Green, Red, Blue and Gold) progressively harder to achieve. Athletes who
qualify for the Gold award or meet Gold level performances in particular events
are generally State equivalent athletes.
At Cherrybrook, Awards are also
given on presentation night to the Most Consistent athlete
in each age group, as well as the Most Improved, based
on a designated points system. By attending as many competition nights and going
in as many events as possible, athletes give themselves the best opportunity to
win these Awards. Awards are also presented to athletes who compete at Regional
and State level, as well as those who attained club records in individual events
during that season. Trophies are also awarded to the best Senior Athletes in the
Under 20 categories, and also to the best Open and Masters Athletes.
The most prestigious club awards are
the * T.J.Beale
Perpetual Trophy*
and the
** Daniel Berry Perpetual
Trophy.
The
T J Beale Award
is given to a girl and boy who best
epitomize the philosophy of Little Athletics. The Criteria for this Award
consists of attendance of 70%, a positive attitude and a willingness to embrace
good sportsmanship. During the 2000/2001 season the Committee agreed that the
perpetual trophy would be awarded to athletes in the Under 12 age group.
The
Daniel Berry Award
is given to a senior athlete over 16 who has a positive attitude and a
willingness to embrace good sportsmanship and has competed more than 8 times in
a season which can include representation for Cherrybrook Senior Athletics, NSW
Athletics and/or Athletics Australia.
*
When Cherrybrook Athletics commenced
in 1994, the Club was financially strong in that initial season due to a
generous contribution from Mr T. J. Beale, the grandfather of our first coach
James Fitzgerald. The committee that year decided it was important to recognise
this, and the T. J. Beale Perpetual Trophy was born. Mr Beale passed away during
the 1998/1999 season.

** Daniel Berry was a Cherrybrook Seniors athlete from 2009 -
2013.
throughout this period of time Daniel broke many NSW and Australian records
in the U20 and Open Male AWD divisions in running events ranging from 100m to
1500m as well as long jump and discus. He also participated for Cherrybrook
Athletics on a regular basis at interclub competitions, State Relays and
Allcomers events with great enthusiasm and determination. In July 2013 Daniel
tragically lost his life to cancer at the very young age of 22. He will be long
remembered by our club for his humble attitude and the inspirational way he
lived his life on and off the athletics track. In memory of Daniel Berry the
2013/14 Cherrybrook Athletics Committee introduced the Daniel Berry Award for
the Senior division of the Club.
